Walking is part of your everyday life which you probably don’t give much thought to at all. To get to work, the grocery store, a friend’s house, or simply for exercise, there’s some level of walking that’s involved. Many of us, particularly since this pandemic, have started taking daily walks to get out and get some fresh air. 

Since it’s something that you are doing anyway, you might as well make money for it. There are apps that will pay you for the walking that you do. It’s certainly not going to be enough to quit your day job or your side hustles. But it’s a source of a little extra pocket money and motivation to get you moving around more. Let’s look at 16 apps that you can download to get started getting paid.

Get Paid to Walk

Achievement 

You can get paid for a lot of different activities including running, biking, and playing a sport in addition to walking. It syncs with over 20 apps including MyFitnessPal, FitBit, and Apple Health. It also supports popular wearable devices including Fitbit, Garmin, and Misfit. 

Your daily activities like weighing yourself, mediating, logging your sleep, and food can earn you as much as 6 points every day. Points are capped at 80 points for each type of activity that you do. 

You can also take various surveys and participate in research studies to earn points as well. 

10,000 points can be redeemed for $10 sent out through direct deposit, PayPal, or you can also donate your points to charity if you choose.  Your points are paid out in 7 business days.

Lympo

One of the newer entrants to this area, you get rewarded with what they call LYM Tokens for allowing them to collect your data. LYM tokens use a blockchain-based platform. You connect Lympo to various health apps and wearables. 

Then you earn these token rewards for reaching health goals. You can also earn additional tokens when you refer your friends and family who sign up with your referral link. These tokens can be redeemed for different items including:

Gift cards

Athleticwear and sports equipment

Game tickets

Lympo parties with other companies to create a marketplace of goods and services that these tokens can be used for. Their partnerships are growing and currently include over 500 fitness professionals. Their plan is to expand to an even more extensive network of wellness and health goods and services providers. 

Sweatcoin

Another fitness and digital currency app that’s similar to Lympo. You get rewarding for sweating it out with Sweatcoin. For every 1,000 steps you take, you earn 0.95 Sweatcoins. Get gift cards or they can be donated to charity. Rewards change regularly so you should probably wait until you see something that you want to save up your Sweatcoin for.  The Sweatcoins must reach a crowdfunded target sum before it’s donated to one of their NGO partners.

It’s available on both Apple’s App Store and Google Play. You can’t use Sweatcoin as a fitness tracker, however. That means you must have your own GPS tracker. Currently, only your steps taken outdoors will count towards Sweatcoin. 

The data that they collect is not shared by other third parties. You can also request access to your data by sending them over a request and verifying your identity. 

Charity Miles

This free app is available on Apple and Android devices for download. Once you create your account, you can choose from different charities that you feel most passionate about. Log many different types of movements like biking, walking, and running. Each mile helps you earn money that can benefit the charity of your choice.

They have over 40 partnerships with various charities including March of Dimes, Habitat for Humanity, Save the Children, and National Park Foundation. There’s also an Employee Empowerment Program that companies can get their employees involved in to help build a culture of giving back. When the app is downloaded, employees can join the private team for their company and together earn money for every mile to charity. 

LifeCoin

If you need more motivation to get out and walking, LifeCoin is another walking app you can download on your Apple/Android device. Your steps turn into LifeCoins which you can redeem for prizes including iTunes gift cards, Apple AirPods, Lululemon gift cards, and Amazon gift cards. 

You can earn as many as 5 LifeCoins per day for your steps as a free user. That amount gets upgraded to 10 LifeCoins per day if you sign up to be a premium member. That will set you back $4.33 a month for that membership level. 

With LifeCoin, you don’t have to connect it with other apps or a smart device to track your steps. It all works through your phone’s existing GPS application. 

Walgreens Balance Rewards

Earn more “Balance Rewards” for your shopping trips to Walgreens with this app. Your point balance can be converted to Redemptions Dollars that can then be used to save money at Walgreens. To start earning money, connect the app to your Apple Watch or other fitness trackers. 

Here is how their point conversion works currently:

 $1 = 1000 points

 $2 = 2000 points

 $3 = 3000 points

 $4 = 4000 points

 $5 = 5000 points

 $10 = 10,000 points

 $20 = 20,000 points

 $50 = 50,000 points

You can earn up to 100 points for completing a health challenge each week. If you complete all four challenge weeks, then you earn a bonus wheel spin that could net you up to 2000 additional points. 

You’re limited to earning up to 1,000 Balance Rewards each month. Points can be earned for walking, logging your blood measurements, and weight. If you’re already a Walgreens shopper, this is a great way to earn points that you can redeem at their locations.

StepBet

This app will gamify your fitness goals so you’ll either win some money by meeting your goals or lose it when you don’t. WayBetter operates StepBet as a subsidiary in addition to a number of fitness apps that are similar to DietBet. Basically, you are betting on yourself achieving these fitness goals. Your goals are determined with help from the app.

It will link to other fitness trackers to track your step goals. Apple Watch, Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit, Samsung Health, and Garmin are among the fitness trackers it works with. 

Weekly goals must be met otherwise you will your money for the whole six-week game period. The app will generally ask that you between at least $40 on your goals. That makes it a sizable sum that will hopefully motivate you to stay on target. 

You will split the money in a pool with any remaining players and can move on to the next challenge. StepBet keeps a portion of this money as their revenue.

FitPotato

FitPotato is another betting fitness app that’s similar to StepBet. Their focus is to keep you on your exercise schedule and get paid if you do. Each week there is a $1000 reward pool that is available. You must bet at least $5 for a chance to win that money. 

Three walk/jog/run step sessions must be completed for you to win the money. To sync your steps, you must open the app. The number of steps that must be completed during each session is currently 6,000. The app is only available on Apple’s App store at the moment. 

PK Coin (PK Rewards)

Get paid for working out and exercising too with PK Coin. Before you start an activity, open up the app and tap the “Start Earning” icon. As soon as you’re finished, end your workout by hitting the button again. It will then calculate your “Effort Score” which is based on your time and effort on the activity. 

Your reward coins can be saved up and redeemed for prizes from many different brands. The rewards include Nike, Southwest, Starbucks, Amazon, and The North Face. They also have various experiences that you can redeem for and update their rewards often. 

There’s also a Leaderboard to boost your motivation to get moving and compete with others. The app is available on Apple and Android devices and can also connect to many Bluetooth sources. 

Runtopia

There are actually more exercise goals that you can set with Runtopia other than running. Set goals for walking, cycling, and for listening to an audio coach too. The app will help choose the right program for you based on the level of training of your choice. Every day you will get new goals and distances. 

To earn rewards, you must meet these goals. Once you have completed one of these daily challenges or completed a workout, you earn Sports Coins. These can be used to redeem for PayPal cash, coupons, discounts, and their premium membership. 

There are certain features that are only available to with their premium membership. The costs are as follows:

Monthly - $3.99

Six months - $17.99

Annual - $23.49

Sports Coins do expire each year on March 1st so make sure you use them up before that. The app is only available on Apple’s App Store. 

EarthMiles

This app is UK-based, however, you can still use the app if you live in the United States. It’s a good passive source of income for those who are active or need some additional motivation. You can earn EarthMiles for walking, running, and biking. 

The harder the exercise, the more EarthMiles you can earn:

1 EarthMile = 1 km of walking

3 EarthMiles = 1 km of cycling

5 EarthMiles = 1 km of running

These EarthMiles can be redeemed for a variety of rewards. Many of these rewards are discounts off health-related products. 

Companies can also use the app in their employee engagement. The app provides access to an exclusive network that a company can use to customize their wellbeing objectives. 

HealthyWage

Get paid to lose weight with HealthyWage. How it works is that you set up a weight loss goal for yourself. You then bet on whether you will reach it or not. They have a calculator that you can use to determine how much you can win based on your goal weight loss. 

You’re a winner as long as you meet your weight loss goal. You can win up to $10,000 and enter up to 10 challenges at one time. You can also get in on their HealthyWage Team Challenges if you want to work with others on reaching your weight loss goals together. 

Fit For Bucks

The Santa Monica-based company is currently available in the Los Angeles area. They are working on adding more cities so be sure to check back routinely. Their goal is to motivate people to get out and moving while they help local businesses. 

Your daily steps are exchanged for lifestyle points which can be used to get free products and services from small businesses. For example, you can get a cup of coffee for 20,000 steps. 

It’s available on Apple’s App Store for iPhones which you can connect to an activity tracker like an Apple Watch. Use it on your runs, walks, hikes, or other activities that get you moving.

Gigwalk

Do you want to go do some window shopping or have a few things you need to go pick up? Why not make all that walking around a little more worth it? Gigwalk allows you to sign up for tasks that you can then earn money that’s paid out via PayPal.

These tasks can take a few minutes or a couple of hours that will determine how much you make. Some examples of tasks you could complete into taking a picture of a restaurant’s menu and uploading it. 

You’ll get better-paying jobs with the more “gigs” you do. If you live in a big city, it’s definitely worth it to go check out what’s available. 

Higi

Higi actually works by partnering with devices and apps which take your fitness activity and turns them into points. These points can then be redeemed for prize drawings or discounts on health and fitness items. 

Download the app for free and link up your apps so that they automatically update your points. Available apps and devices include Nike+, Strava, FitBit, Garmin, endomondo, iHealth, and Under Armour. 

Points are earned for miles walked, using a Higi health tracking station (measures blood pressure, weight, BMI, body fat, and your pulse) that’s located in pharmacies, or referring friends and family. 

Winwalk

This app is a free pedometer that tracks your daily steps, distance, calories, and active time. It also sends you reminders so that you keep on moving. For your efforts, you will earn coin credits for every 100 steps you take.

Those steps can then be exchanged for gift cards from many different brands. Amazon, Starbucks, and Walmart are among the stores you can get gift cards from. You are capped at 10,000 steps per day that can be earned. 

Tips for Maximizing Your Walking Rewards

To maximize the money that you earn, use as many of the apps as possible. That way your work will count for several different apps that can earn you money, products, and other things. 

You can get yourself more motivated for exercising more by getting a friend or two to sign up as well. Each of you can get help keep each other track. You can also set up competitions with others on some of these apps as well. 

One note about downloading several of these apps is that you will notice your battery running down faster using them. Make sure you have a good charge before you leave on your walk.


Final Word on Free Apps That Pay You to Walk

Even if you download and actively use many of these apps, its’ not going to become a significant source of income. Keep your expectations reasonable. It is however a pretty easy way to make a little bit of money for something that you are going to any way that’s healthy too. 

Remember that most of these apps are gathering your data in return for a little extra cash. So don’t download and use one of these apps if you are not comfortable with that idea.
